How to make a mosaic of photos in PhotoShop

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

For Katie…:)

In this “How to…” I will showing you how to make a mosaic of photos in PhotoShop like the ones I have in my weekly feature called: “50 Things I {heart}”.

Your final image will look similar to this one.

First create a new image 375 pixels wide x 375 pixels high with a resolution of 72 pixels/inch.  This resolution is good for web applications.  If you’d like to print your image the best quality is 300 pixels/inch. Color Mode: RGB and the Background can be any color…I chose Transparent.

Next, open an image you’d like to use in your mosaic.

Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, select the area of the photo you’d like to use in your mosaic.

Holding down the shift key, will lock the proportions into a square.

Once you have selected the area you’d like to crop, Go to Image, Crop.

Resize the image to 125×125 pixels by going to Image, Image Resize, 125, 125.

Using the Rectangle Marquee Tool, select the entire image and go to Edit, Copy (or Ctrl “c”).  You now have that area of the photo copied onto your clipboard.

Go back toyour 375×375 image and go to Edit, paste (or cntl “v”).

Your cropped image will come into your 375×375 image on it’s own layer.  Making sure you have that layer selected, use the “Move Tool” to move the image to where you want it.  Repeat the last steps until you have enough square images to fill the 375×375 image.

You should have a total of 10 layers.

Once you have all your layers, you will have “flatten” down your file to one layer.  To flatten, go your layers window and click onto the button that looks like an arrowhead inside a circle.  A pull down menu will come down, choose “Flatten Image”.

Once the layers are flattened, go to Save As, select .jpg and you’re done!!!

Sewing Paper – It’s sew…punny!

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I love this paper.  As you know, I’m a sucker for puns and I was immediately attracted to it.  It also reminded me of a quilt.  That’s when the lightbulb went on.  Why don’t I sew it like a quilt?  I’ve never really understood the trend of sewing paper.  I’ve seen it done a lot in cardmaking and thought it looked OK…but I never thought of how I could use it.  It was like it was meant to be…

Starting off with a 12×12, I cut each Love Pun into individual rectangles.

I adhered the 4 rectangles onto a piece of scrap paper to make sure nothing moved out of place while I sewed.  I trimmed the paper so you couldn’t see it.

I started sewing the middle sems.

After I got the two middle sems done, I adhered what I had done onto my card.  I proceeded to sew the edges.

Voila!  A quilted puns Valentine’s Day card!
